How to begin

Getting Started

The process

Three steps toward beginning

Background+Border

Step one

Reach Out For an Introductory Call

You can contact us via email or schedule a call on Acuity Scheduling. If it feels like a good fit, we’ll schedule an intake session together.

Step two

Schedule an Intake Session

Your first session allows you and your therapist to develop an initial understanding of what brings you to therapy and what changes you desire. While an assessment period occurs over a number of sessions, this first session begins building rapport and offers a glimpse into what it’s like to work with your therapist.

Step three

Embark on Ongoing Work

Therapy is not a linear process. Over time, you and your therapist will develop a richer understanding of the experiences, relationships, and emotional patterns that shape your life. We’ll help you move toward a life that feels more fully your own.

Our model

Out-of-Network Care

Sōhum is an out-of-network practice. This is a deliberate choice.

Insurance-based models play an important role in expanding access to care, but they can also place limitations on the depth, privacy, and individuality of the therapeutic process. We’ve chosen to practice outside that system so your therapeutic work can be more fully shaped around you.

In a culture where privacy has become increasingly rare, therapy can – and should – remain a protected space. Working out-of-network supports that commitment in several important ways.

The first reason

Confidentiality

Working out-of-network allows therapy to remain more private and less administratively mediated. Using out-of-network benefits may still require a diagnosis for reimbursement purposes, but insurance involvement otherwise remains limited.
The second reason

Clinical Flexibility

Treatment unfolds according to your needs and your therapist’s clinical judgment. Rather than emphasizing medical necessity, short-term treatment, or standardized approaches, therapy can remain responsive to you as an individual.
The third reason

Investment & Commitment

Many clients find that making an intentional investment in therapy deepens their engagement in the work. Therapy asks for time, honesty, reflection, and effort. Financial investment can sometimes support a stronger sense of commitment and continuity within that process.

The fourth reason

Thoughtful, Sustainable Care

This model also allows our therapists to maintain more sustainable caseloads, creating greater space for presence, preparation, reflection, and thoughtful clinical care.

Reimbursement

Using your Out-of-Network Benefits

Most of our clients use their out-of-network benefits for reimbursement. We recognize that navigating out-of- network benefits can feel complicated, and offer several options to make this process as simple and accessible as possible.

I.

The Traditional Method

Pay for sessions at the time of service and submit your superbill directly to your insurance company for reimbursement. We provide monthly superbills containing all of the information needed to submit your claim.

II.

The Admin-Free Method

Use Thrizer to manage the reimbursement process for you. Thrizer submits claims directly to your insurance company and handles the administrative work on your behalf.

III.

The Co-Insurance Only Method

For eligible insurance plans, Thrizer may allow you to pay only your estimated co-insurance at the time of each session rather than the full session fee. Thrizer then submits claims directly to your insurance company and manages reimbursement behind the scenes, helping to reduce your upfront costs. Coverage estimates are based on information provided by your insurance company.
