Who we work with
Individuals
We work with adults who are ready to face their struggles with a trusted therapist. Whether you’re dealing with identity issues and low self-esteem, working through trauma, living with anxiety or depression, facing challenges in relationships, or if you just want a fuller, more connected and joyful life, we’re here to help.
The journey back to your Self involves connecting with and processing old wounds, traumas and painful memories. Along the way, we’ll also support you in creating new, healthier behaviors and lifestyles. We give you the therapeutic experience you need to get the results you want.
Couples
Relationships take work. Your partnership can be your deepest source of nourishment, but sometimes unhealthy patterns and situations inhibit you from connecting in safe and meaningful ways. Among other things, couples therapy can help you to: repair past hurts and rebuild trust; understand triggers; deepen your emotional intimacy; and learn new, healthier skills and ways of interacting.
Emotions are foundational to our relationships. At Sōhum, we primarily work from an attachment-based and emotions-focused lens (EFCT) to support you in strengthening your emotional connection to your Self and your partner. We’ll help you to cultivate safety and security with each other, communicate more effectively and deeply, and work on what gets in the way. You (the couple) and your therapist will work through problematic patterns in real time, as they emerge in session. This dynamic, in vivo exposure allows you to carry your experience outside of therapy – recognizing your needs and identifying problematic cycles to make new, healthier choices.
Groups
Group therapy is a communal way to find solace, support and healing. Groups are run by one of our trained professionals and target a specific issue or topic. You’ll connect with a diverse group of people that have a shared experience. Groups allow members to accompany one another on their journeys, to cheer one another on, to learn new skills, and to know in a very tangible way that no one is alone in their experience. Reach out to us to find out what groups we are currently running or are upcoming!
What we treat
Coming back to your true Self is what we’re all about. We guide you in understanding when and how you began disconnecting from your source and safely help you open back up to the core You. We do this experientially, with care and compassion in the therapy room, so that you can carry it beyond the therapeutic space too. It’s the key to helping you live your most authentic, fulfilling life.
Sometimes the critic in our head can be the loudest voice of all. We’ll help you to witness it and to understand it in a new light – as a protector that developed to guard the most vulnerable parts of you. We’ll help you to work with this part of you, as we support you in reconnecting with your intrinsic worth and lovability.
Anxiety is a natural part of life, but when we become consumed by it, it interferes in our ability to be present and live fully. When we get lost in the sea of hypotheticals and worries, we lose our connection to the moment and to others. We’ll help you to invite in your anxiety, face difficult feelings that may be underlying it, and navigate it in new and different ways. Together, we can witness these feelings of overwhelm while opening you back up to your Self and helping you to live your life more fully.
Depression can be debilitating and isolating. It can keep you from the things and people you love and care about. At Sohum, we understand the weight of depression and the toll it takes on your ability to be with who and what matters most. Our compassionate yet direct approach involves confronting your pain head-on, in a safe and understanding space. Together, we’ll unravel the complexities of depression and find a path that leads you back to the activities, relationships, and passions that bring you joy. You can rediscover your vibrant Self, and live a vibrant life aligned with your values.
Trauma can remain with you long after the event has passed. We’ll help you to safely process the experience and feelings related to traumatic events. You can feel safer in your body and in the world; learn how to soothe your nervous system; let go of negative beliefs; and open up to loving and nourishing relationships.
Learn to embrace your emotions in new, healthy ways so that you can use them as guides and resources. You don’t need to feel controlled by your emotions, nor do you have to fear them and push them away. We’ll hold your feelings along side you in a compassionate, nurturing and transformative way.
We’re all wired for connection and relationships can be our greatest sources of nourishment. Therapy can help you gain awareness into patterns that don’t serve you and cultivate healthy and effective communication skills and emotional intimacy.
Therapy can help you connect with your Self and your core desires and needs. In understanding more about your Self, you can get clear on what it is you really want in a relationship. Whether you’re actively dating, about to enter the dating world or are in a committed relationship, this knowledge will allow you to feel freer, and more confident and grounded.
ADHD can make it hard to function and fulfill tasks. Bringing mindfulness to your thoughts and behaviors can support you in responding vs. impulsively reacting; staying on task; and regulating emotions.
Moving to a new country or city, even by choice, can feel like you’ve left a part of yourself behind. You might miss the familiarity of your home culture, language, social customs, and communities. Adjusting to a new culture and changes in your identity can be challenging. This sense of loss and displacement is known as cultural bereavement.
Here at Sohum, we understand these struggles. We’re here to help you cope with these changes and make sense of your new environment. Our safe and supportive space allows you to express your feelings, build resilience, understand your new realities, and foster a sense of belonging in your new home.
