Therapy for ADHD in NYC
ADHD in Adults
ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) is characterized by difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsiveness. It typically begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood. For many individuals, it’s a pervasive condition that impacts a number of areas of their lives and can cause great distress.
The way ADHD manifests varies from person to person, between childhood and adulthood, and across genders. Sometimes people are aware of struggles they have without being able to put a name to it. These individuals may have struggled for quite some time, only to be diagnosed in adulthood with ADHD.
If you’re struggling with ADHD, therapy can be a great support to both working with yourself and the diagnosis.
ADHD Therapy
Individuals come to therapy for ADHD in a number of different ways. Some have been dealing with ADHD for some time and have some tools and coping skills, but want to continue to support themselves in their care. ADHD might be part of what they’re coping with, among (and sometimes related to) other struggles they’re facing. Other adults have just received an ADHD diagnosis despite having struggled for quite some time. This can bring up a range of responses and feelings – anger, grief, relief, freedom, or validation.
At Sōhum, our therapists are here for you no matter where you are on your path. We draw on your natural strengths, so that you work with yourself rather than feeling like your fighting a diagnosis. We also realize that labels are limiting and don’t speak to the totality of a person’s experiences or circumstances. Our therapists take a systems based approach – not dismissing diagnoses, but also not being confined by them and instead treating the person in front of us.
We will help you to slow down and bring mindful attention to your experience in the therapy space, get in touch with and clearer around your emotions and thoughts, and collaborate on strategies and tools for you to experiment with outside of therapy.
